That's One Big Booty

Syracuse has been experiencing record highs and it's not even summer yet. It has been very muggy, too, with humidity nearing 100%. We haven't had a good rain in almost a month despite the fact that scattered T-storms have been in the forecast every day for the past two and a half weeks. To top it all off, we have decided to carry on the family tradition; we're not getting air conditioning until the kids move out.

Thanks to the purchase of our new Mosquito Magnet Defender, we can actually use our back yard now without dousing ourselves in a gallon of deet. Hannah is eagerly awaiting a kiddie-pool, but until we get one, the roasting pans will have to do. She loved playing in the water and was in there long enough for her size 3 Cruisers to fill to capacity, expanding to about an inch and a half thick.

Unfortunately, she will probably also carry on the family tradition and her booty will stick out an inch an a half on its own. Sorry, Hannah, its in your genes (pun intended).

Matt - Does that mosquito magnet thing work? They want $200+ at Home Depot, and I'd hate to shell it out only to find that the mosquito population in my yard has not changed. Or worse, that the magnet attracts more, but not to the net where they'd be toast.

Well, I have had the Mosquito Magnet for almost a week and there are well over 200 dead mosquitos in the net and only 2 or 3 other bugs, so it definately attracts and kills mosquitos. The population was significantly reduced before the next round of eggs hatched, but there are still a lot less than before. The directions say it works immediately but to allow 4 - 6 weeks to interrupt the breeding cycle. Judging from the pure volume of mosquitos, I dont think they are being attracted and not killed.

As far as the price, everywhere up here had them for $295, but Country Propane also included an exchange tank and filled it for free. A tank of propane lasts 3 weeks. You're also supposed to replace the octenol attractent (3 for $20) when you refill the tank and you'll need CO2 cartrages (3 for $9) to clean out the fuel line every couple of tanks, so factor those into the upkeep cost, too.

Keep in mind that the Mosquito Magnet is the original. There are cheaper, immitation products out there, but none of them looked like they would work quite a well.

Overall, I am very satisfied. Two weeks ago, when we would go out on our back porch, at least a dozen mosquitos would be on us immediately; now, two or three show up right away and maybe one or two more after we've been out ther for a while. I imagine that in 4 - 6 weeks we won't even notice them. I'll let you know, but hey, if Rush Limbaugh says it works, I'm sure it does; he doesn't endorse just anything.
